Have you ever thought of writing down everything happening in your life no matter how positive or negative it is?
If the answer is no and you want to start a journal but you have got no clue where to start and what to do. Do Not Worry! I am here, writing this post just for you.
I didn’t know the importance of journaling until last year (2021). I used to think that journaling was all about writing down your thoughts and feelings and that’s it.
Although, it’s true. What I didn’t know was that it really affects your mood and you no longer have to keep things in your mind, that means a less cluttered mind and it has a lot of long-term benefits too which I never thought of before.
I won’t lie to you but when I first started it was quite boring and I did not like to sit and write about things that were happening to me (especially the negative ones).
That’s why I started doing it just twice or a maximum of thrice a week.
But as I went along for a few months, I started to see some benefits (which you will read in a moment) and since then I decided to do it even more.
At the same time, I was really afraid – “ what will someone think if they managed to find my journal and read it”.
This thought of mine may seem ridiculous but I didn’t want anyone to read my super personal things and that’s why I started to use journal like this and couldn’t recommend it enough if you are worried about it too.

Why should you Start Journaling?
There are many surprising benefits of it. Let’s take a look at them:
- You get to know what’s going on in your mind.
- You get clarity of thoughts.
- It Helps you reduce stress and anxiety.
- You’ll be able to focus on something that’s more important.
- Journaling makes you happy (yes, really! I’m saying it after experiencing it myself).
How To Start Journaling?
Like I said before, I wasn’t a fan of journaling when I started out but just after a couple of months, it became a habit of mine. It might take some time for you to make it a habit as well so, you’ll have to be a little patience here.
1- Write something you are grateful for.
Have no idea where to start? start writing a few things (even one) that you are grateful for can really add some positivity to your life immediately.

2- Choose a time that works best for you
Are you a night owl or a morning bird? Personally, I love writing mine at night before going to bed.
I generally like writing about my day and things that I’m grateful for in just a few lines along with my next day’s to-do list.
If you are a morning bird and want to write your journal in the morning, definitely go for it because here you are your own boss and you absolutely can do things your way.
3- Create a judgment-free zone
I think this is something that most of us struggle with but creating a judgment-free zone while you write a journal is a must as it allows you to write things that you don’t want to share with anyone and by doing so you will be free up your mental space as well.

4- You don’t have to write every day if you don’t want to.
Whatever the reason, if you think you can’t write every day, that’s fine. Instead, you can start by doing it a couple of times in a week as I did.
One thing to remember is that there is no rule for it unless you want to make any for yourself and you can do it in a way that you think will work for you.
Don’t rush to make it a habit. Once you start writing for a couple of weeks and if that’s something that is for you (yes! there is a possibility that it may not work for you) and I’m sure you will miss it if you stop doing it for any reason in the future and want to start all over again.
5- Be creative in your own way.
Who doesn’t want to be creative? Maybe a little. Pinterest is one of the great ways to look for inspiration. Adding some cute little stickers is also a good idea if that’s what you prefer. You can find them on the creative market, Etsy or some free ones are available on Canva too.
6- Invest in a notebook and good quality pens
My creativity automatically increases when I write with pens that are smooth and easy to write and at the same time, it’s so much fun.
