Have you ever sat back alone for a moment to think about what is your priority in life? Most of us live a stressful life and have no time for things that actually matter, which is also a reminder that you have to set priorities in life.
We have limited time in a day, and expecting ourselves to complete all the tasks you have written down in your to-do list is neither a realistic expectation nor a productive one.
As you already know that our priorities in life change from time to time, and different people have different priorities for their lives, but there are a few things that are important to all of us.
Knowing what your priority is in the present moment is something that can shape your life in a better way.
If you work the whole day and still feel that you have no time for yourself or for the things that matter the most to you (could be your parents, partner, or anything you love), then it’s time to set your priority in life and start focusing on them more.
But as I said before, our time and attention span are limited, and almost everything around us is trying its best to capture it.
We often spend all our time doing things that make us feel overwhelmed later rather than satisfied.
So, how can you prioritize things in your life that will help you give your attention and time to things that are important for your better future and make you happy at the end of the day because that’s what matters the most.
Top 10 Priorities In Life
1. Yourself.
“By taking care of myself, I have so much more to offer to the world than I do when I was running empty.”- Ali Washington.
You are the number one priority for yourself.
Because when we take care of ourselves, we feel the best and try to do our best, and when we’re happy from deep within, the chances of spreading happiness to other people get higher. As they say, you can’t pour from an empty cup, and it makes perfect sense here.
2. Finances.
Money acts as fuel in our lives, and in order to survive in this world, we need it.
There’s no doubt that it’s one of the main priorities of our lives.
Different people have different financial goals- for some people, it can be saving for their college funds and/or vacation, and for others, it can be saving for their retirement.
Prioritizing your finances means making mindful choices on how to spend your money.
3. Rest.
In this world where we are constantly running from one task to another, we forget that rest is as equally important as doing any other work.
Have you ever had a situation when you are feeling tired, can’t concentrate on the work, and feeling completely burned out? You are most likely not having a good rest and this is the time to change this by making it your priority in life.
4. Your long-term plans.
“Keep your eyes focused on your long-term goals. Even if you make a mistake, get back on track and keep moving.”
Our long term goals are what motivate us to take action in the present moment.
Usually, we work on our long term plans so we can make our life better and live a life we always wanted for ourselves.
If you haven’t set your long term goals yet, I have written down these two articles that might help you out:
How to set goals and achieve them and How to reinvent yourself at any age.
5. Your Hobby
Your hobby needs to be as important as other things I have mentioned above. When we take some time to do something that feels great, refreshes ourselves, and helps us thrive in our daily routine, we tend to perform better in our other less-interesting tasks.
Depending on your schedule you can decide the time when you will be able to perform your hobby. Trust me, you won’t regret the time you will spend on it.
Here are 52 hobby ideas that will help you get started.
6. Positive environment.
When I mention a positive environment I don’t just mean that you need to create it for work but also in your personal life.
If you spend most of your time with your friends who are negative, never lift you up, and get jealous of your success then this environment will never help you grow in life.
I have a favorite quote that says
“We can not hang out with negative people and expect a positive life.”
And it’s quite true.
7. Relationships.
Relationships are another aspect of life that we shouldn’t forget about when it comes to setting priorities in life.
There are studies that suggest good relationships, whether it’s with your partner, your parents, or parents, are also connected to happiness.
You can for example, meet your parents on the weekends or if you live far away simply call them at night when you are free.
8. Peace of mind.
“When things change inside you, things change around you.”
And that being said, peace of mind is a choice we make for ourselves.
Below are the things I am prioritizing that bring me peace of mind:
- Healthy relationships.
- Finances.
- Positive environment.
- Being kind to myself and others.
- Avoiding gossiping and drama by setting boundaries.
- Forgiving myself for making mistakes and realizing that I have come so far in life.
- Staying happy for no reason.
9. Personal growth.
“Growth is often uncomfortable, messy and full of feelings you were not expecting but it’s necessary.”
We love our comfort zone because it’s a safe place to be in and there is no risk of failure but if you choose to stay in it, you will miss a lot of opportunities.
We grow when we choose to get out of our comfort zone and take risks and make some mistakes and progress along the way. But the experience we get is priceless because it makes us overall a better, and kinder person.
10. Adventure
“The purpose of life, after all, is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for a newer and richer experience.”- Eleanor Roosevelt
Adventure is another form of self-care.
Personally, it’s on my list and I need to prioritize it in my life.
Here are a few benefits of prioritizing adventure in your life:
- Outdoor activities are good for our well-being.
- It reduces stress.
- You become more self aware.
- It’s fun.
5 habits that will help you stick to your priorities
It’s easy to set priorities, and it’s even easier to forget about them the next day. Here are 5 effective ways that will help you stick to them.
1. Saying “no” when needed.
When it comes to prioritizing things in life, you will find that you will say ‘no’ to a lot more things than you’ll say yes to.
And it’s pretty vital because until and unless we won’t filter out things we don’t want in our lives, we will be confused and distracted from the ones we do want in our lives.
2. Give your 100%.
Now that you know what’s important for you, it’s time to put in the work with your full attention and focus. I would suggest focusing on only one task at a time so you can give your best.
If you get distracted easily, create a distractions free environment.
3. Stop procrastinating.
The truth is we all procrastinate from time to time but I believe that since you already know what is important to you and why, the chance of procrastination gets low but still if you find yourself procrastination, simply remind yourself why it is important to be done and you will get that momentum in no time.
Additionally, I also wrote an article on how to stop procrastination that might help.
4. Review your progress.
This time when you make progress even the smallest one, don’t forget to review and track them at the end of the week and make plans for the next week.
To track your progress, feel free to use Google Sheets or a piece of paper depending on what you prefer.
5. Reward yourself.
Last but not least, whenever you successfully complete a task, don’t forget to reward yourself. It’s a great way to motivate yourself and keep up the momentum. It doesn’t have to be something big even watching your favorite TV show can be a good idea.
I also have an article on 50 ways to reward yourself in case you’re looking for ideas!
