Mindful Activities For a Social Media Detox Challenge you need today to live outside of your screen!

Do you know how much time you spend on your social media or on your screen in general? I was checking mine a while ago and I was shocked to know that it was more than I would have guessed. It was over 9 hours. Bad, I know.

As someone who works from home full time and spends almost most of my time on my screen, I know that I can’t completely stop doing it. What I can do is start slow and work on my habits.

If you are anything like me, you want to do this too. We all know that this much screen time is not good for any of us. It makes us tired, dull and also stops us from getting new creative ideas.

And most importantly because there is a whole world outside of our screen.

While I understand that computers have become an integral part of our lives, we can only start small at a time. So for example, instead of torturing yourself and setting a goal like, “NOT using my mobile phones on the weekend for the whole day” (oh I hear this one all the time), in my opinion, it isn’t realistic or practically possible.

I think when it comes to digital or social media detox, we can focus on things that WE can control. If you work in the office in your 9-5 job, you may not be able to control that specific time. But it’s okay, we are going to focus on areas that are in YOUR control and what we can do instead.

There Is A Life Outside Of Our Devices

Theoretically we all know this but are we truly living it? Have a look back on your week, can you say you’ve been out experiencing things? Have you played any sports? Catch up with friends? Practiced any of your hobbies? Tried something new? If yes, great but if the answer is no. Maybe this is your time to start doing that.

I can understand it’s easier said than done as I am someone  who spent so much of my time in my room, layed down anxious, worried about my future and what not. This was the case in all my teenage years and even early twenties.

So even if you aren’t able to take any big step, start small – very small like with a little walk outside in your nearest park? Or anything that will let you shut your device down for some time.

It’s Okay To Start By Yourself

When we see people enjoying trips with their friends on social media, we feel like doing that too. But then we wonder why we don’t have those kinds of friends who we can go out and have fun with.

If you find that most of your friends are busy in their life and they don’t share the same interest as you, it is normal and completely fine to start by yourself.

Some people have friends who have similar interests while others don’t (like us), but it’s alright too. I think our time is limited and we shouldn’t be waiting for other people to enjoy with us if they have different priorities.

You might meet new people along the way or even if you don’t, you have your own why and you know why it is crucial for you. (Yes, please know YOUR ‘why’).

For example: In my case, My why is that I spend too much time on my electronics and I want to spend at least 1 hour with myself every single day so I can get new ideas, connect with nature and live a life outside of my screen.

(For me, spending time in solitude is quite easy for me and it will get easier for you over time as well).

Now, let’s see how you can do mindful activities for social media detox without making big changes in your routine.

3) Get Into Hobby That Doesn’t Require Mobile Or Laptop

If you are a creative person and wouldn’t mind getting into it. You could try creative activities. If you loved drawing or painting back in school but never get enough time for it anymore, why not try it again? Here are 52 hobbies to start today or 15 affordable hobbies that are in trend right now.

1) Have A Walk In Your Nearest Park Or Terrace

Yes, whatever is convenient for you. We are not supposed to set goals that aren’t realistic. Walking in my opinion is an underrated activity. It is mindful, free and perfect for when you want to get some time off of your electronics.

When it comes to walking, I recently learned that I used to set goals like “walk 6,000 steps”. I have stopped doing that for some reasons. It kind of pressured me to finish my goal rather than enjoy my walking.

If you are anything like me, you might be facing this too. Ultimately, I’d say it’s up to you if you want to set goals like that or not.

2) Give Your Eyes Some Rest

I mean this one is so important after spending HOURS staring at our screen. Can you say you take good care of your eyes? If not, let’s change that for the better.

You could start with washing your eyes with cold water and using an eye mask to give your eyes some rest. I guess it’s so important yet so easy to forget. This is what you could do right after winding up from your screen.

Here are some of the eye masks you could consider:

  1. Eye Mask For Side Sleeper
  2. Silk Eye Mask Combo Pack
  3. Cotton Eye Mask

It can take around 15 minutes and you’d love the difference it makes for you.

3) Get Into Hobby That Doesn’t Require Mobile Or Laptop

If you are a creative person and wouldn’t mind getting into it. You could try creative activities. If you loved drawing or painting back in school but never get enough time for it anymore, why not try it again?

  • 1) Go Out And Play some sports.
  • 2) Stretch/yoga practice If You Aren’t Into Sports.
  • 3) Cook and eat something mindfully.
  • 4) Get into reading.
  • 5) Spend some time with family/friends.

Most of the time we think that in order to feel good about ourselves, we must indulge in some sort of activities but I believe this isn’t always necessary. You could just sit with yourself for some time and process your thoughts – about your work, people you met, etc. You aren’t supposed to be productive all the time.
